Geography
The Northallerton General Practice Specialty Training Programme extends from Ripon in the south to Stokesley in the north. It straddles the northern part of the Vale of York, extending from the North York Moors to The Yorkshire Dales. Northallerton itself is a pleasant market town, within easy reach of York, Leeds, Teeside and Newcastle and the coast. The area is predominantly rural with spectacularly beautiful countryside and attractive villages. Throughout the year there are many festivals in the region, and apart from the countryside and its many recreational facilities, other attractions include Fountains Abbey, Masham and its breweries, racing at Ripon, Thirsk and Catterick and the historic town of Richmond.
Profile
The educational aim of this Programme is to help Specialist Training Registrars become lifelong learners and enthusiastic, rigorous and resilient General Practitioners. Specialist Training Registrars will be provided with a stimulating and challenging environment conducive to learning. They will be encouraged and supported in the planning of their own learning. Through one-to-one and group tutorials, case analysis and a half day release programme covering an eclectic range of subjects, including the medical humanities, they will be given the opportunity to become secure in the broad range of competencies needed for a successful career in general practice.
This Programme also provides excellent training in rural medicine.
