Programme Structure and Thursday Teaching
The Sheffield GP Specialty Training Programme is part of postgraduate training in the South Yorkshire region of Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber. (The other programmes in the locality are Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster.)
Aims and Objectives
The aims and objectives of the programme are to help the trainees to:
- be clinically competent;
- have a broad awareness of primary health care issues;
- have good communications skills;
- have the ability to make changes in practice; and
- to have good organisational skills.
Programme Philosophy
Doctors accepted onto the Sheffield GPSTP are expected to be responsible for their own learning in training practices and GPSTP groups. The emphasis is on holistic care, a broad awareness of issues (including political, social, psychological), and the doctor-patient relationship.
GP Specialty Training Programme
To qualify as an independent GP in the UK, you must undertake a 3 year GP Specialty Training Programme (GPSTP). In Sheffield, this comprises:
- 6 months in GP and 6 months in an accredited hospital post in ST1
- 3 x 4 months accredited hospital posts in ST2
- 12 months in GP in ST3
To see more information about our GP and hospital training placements, please see GP Training Posts and Hospital Training Posts.
Trainees are allocated to a 3 year training programme by Health Education Yorkshire & The Humber upon successful completion of selection centre assessment and accepting the offer of a training rotation.
Please Note
Training programmes are centrally administered by the Sheffield GPSTP Office.
Any trainee who wishes to investigate the possibility of changing their rotation should contact Linda Latif to discuss further.
