Welcome to your August 2022 update about the Foundation elearning programme.  

The Foundation elearning programme has been developed specifically for Foundation doctors by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in partnership with NHS England elearning for healthcare (NHSE elfh), and is approved by the UK Foundation Programme (UKFPO). 

Failure to prescribe safely is one of the commonest causes of untoward patient incidents in medical practice.

  • Administrative triage using digital tools in General Practice

Supporting administrative staff in sorting, signposting and delivering administrative triage

Elearning to support sorting, signposting and delivering administrative triage now available

NHS England has worked in partnership with the Practice Managers Association to develop the Administrative Triage Using Digital Tools in General Practice elearning resources.

Practice staff play a vital role in supporting patients to get the right care based on their needs. Using online consultation tools to sort and signpost patient requests to the correct member of staff or service can enable clinicians to prioritise requests based on clinical need. Having the information in advance of a consultation can support the consultation discussion.

This elearning resource has been developed to support general practice administrative staff to design their practice workflow in sorting, signposting, and delivering administrative triage. The sessions aim to support an inclusive approach to managing demand and workload in a general practice setting.

Throughout each session the learner is signposted to existing resources, examples, tips and knowledge checks, which are mini quizzes designed to check how confident learners feel in each topic area.

About the elearning programme

There are 5 quick elearning sessions designed to support general practice staff in:

  • introducing administrative triage and understanding the evidence behind using an online consultation system to support patient requests
  • designing a practice workflow and setting up a triage list
  • promoting the service to patients and understanding some of the considerations for the practice team when working remotely
  • confidently taking patients, or their nominated carer, through an online consultation request over the telephone or in person
  • sorting patient requests and signposting to the right place, service or clinician for clinical triage

The elearning sessions take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

  • Building a More SuppoRTTive Culture

New session for postgraduate doctors in training returning to work now available

NHS England elearning for healthcare (NHSE elfh) has worked with NHS England’s Supported Return to Training (SuppoRTT) team to develop a new elearning resource on positive culture within the workplace.

Building a More SuppoRTTive Culture explores the significance of organisational culture in shaping the experience of postgraduate doctors in training returning to work after a break and offers guidance on the measures that individuals can take to bring about positive cultural change, creating an NHS in which its staff can thrive and that is safe for the patients it serves.

Developed with contributions from experts in the field, such as Professor Michael West CBE (Senior Fellow at The Kings Fund) and Professor Jim Barrie (Senior Lecturer in Medical Education at Edge Hill University), the 40-minute session highlights the fundamental role of every single person within the healthcare system, clinical and non-clinical, in building a positive, supportive culture.

Although the resource aims to help create a positive culture for returning postgraduate doctors in training (with all the benefits this brings) it has wider implications for, and parallels with, how we build a more supportive culture more generally within the NHS.

  • Foundation elearning programme update June 2022

Welcome to your June 2022 update about the Foundation elearning programme.

Supervised learning events (SLEs) are an essential part of your learning in your foundation years. Even if you think you know how to get the best out of them, you may still get more by doing the SLE sessions now.

  • Improve medicines safety, visit the SCRIPT Safety programme 

The SCRIPT Safety programme aims to develop your knowledge and skills in prescribing practice, therapeutics and provides guidance on medicines management. The programme covers a range of topics and supports the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Patient Safety Challenge ‘Medication Without Harm’. 

Each module in the SCRIPT Safety programme takes approximately 60 minutes to complete. All course materials have been authored by a team of expert healthcare professionals and are regularly reviewed and updated. You can learn more about this elearning programme by visiting the SCRIPT website. 

  • STASHH Mentorship Programme

STASHH (Student and Trainee Association for Sexual Health and HIV) are offering mentorship programme to pre-specialty trainee doctors interested in genitourinary medicine (GUM) as a career.

The mentor will provide guidance and insights into careers in GUM, offer career counseling, offer opportunities for audits and research projects, help develop professionalism and support personal growth of the mentee.

We will prioritise internal medicine trainees but foundation year trainees are welcome to sign up and will be allocated a mentor if possible.

  • Near Peer Mentoring: Webinar Q&A for FY2 

In August 2021, Yorkshire and Humber Foundation School have opened up a new Mentoring Scheme. The aim of this scheme is for new FY1s in need of advice/ guidance can be matched to an FY2 'mentor' who can provide the support needed.

The Foundation School Director recently held a webinar for FY2's interested in becoming a mentor. The webinar concluded with a Q&A session, a recording of which will be uploaded for viewing shortly.

  • Support for Trainees Requiring Additional Support - FDocs Plus Programme

The F|Docs Plus Programme is offering a pilot programme for trainees who may want additional support in the NHSE Yorkshire & Humber region. This programme is part of the F|Docs Plus programme package. 

The support involves access to an appointed mentor who will support the trainee through the year with virtual sessions, agreed goals, plan and support with actions and accountability. 

Please find attached more information about the programme and how to sign up in the Documents section below. 

The pilot is initially for 45 trainees and places will be allocated as trainees sign up.

  • SCRIPT – supporting safer prescribing practices   

The SCRIPT Foundation programme is a suite of elearning modules specifically created to improve safety and competency among foundation trainees around prescribing, therapeutics and medicines management. The portfolios include 49 modules for foundation doctors, 8 modules for foundation dentists and 59 modules for foundation pharmacists. 

Each module takes approximately 60 minutes to complete and does not have to be completed in one sitting. Content has been authored by a team of expert healthcare professionals and is reviewed and updated on a regular basis.  Ask your Foundation school for advice on how to access the SCRIPT portfolios.

  • Principles of Orthopaedics Course

We are delighted to introduce you to the 'Principles of Orthopaedics' Course

We believe that this course can be an ideal induction course for all Foundation Trainees before joining the orthopaedic rotation to allow them to start the placement confident and enjoy it. We would appreciate it if you can recommend to your trainees as an essential component of their orthopaedic placement.

All attendees will receive a 12 point CPD certificate from the Orthopaedic Academy approved by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
