FAQs

Why should I do enhance? What’s in it for me?

The enhance programme, whether done at Level 1 (enable) or Level 2 (explore) allows you to demonstrate your Foundation competences in a different way. It provides evidence that you have met these competences, and at the same time allows you to explore areas beyond Foundation, thinking differently about your work, and building your CV towards your next role.

Does enhance involve extra work?

You have to demonstrate your Foundation competences one way or another, so while enhance enable might feel like extra work, in fact it is allowing you to show these competences in a structured and organised way. Enhance enable takes about 4-6 hours per module.

Enhance explore is a more significant commitment involving work over a full year. It is therefore only available to F2 doctors who can use their study leave, or those towards the end of F1 who may have to use annual leave if they want to do this.

How much does enhance cost to do?

There is no charge for the enhance programme. The exception is if you are interested in completing a PG Certificate related to enhance, which will cost money (see Question How do I get to do a PG Certificate)

Is enhance mandatory?

No, participation in enhance is entirely voluntary.

Do I have to complete the whole enhance programme if I sign up?

No, with enhance enable you can do as many or as few modules as you wish. Enhance explore will need to be completed within a year (all modules).

Will enhance give me any extra credit at ARCP or extra points at interview?

Enhance is not an ARCP requirement, but many people find it is easier to organise their portfolio and show that they have met their competences once they have done the programme.

You will get a certificate for each module you complete. This can be added to your portfolio and CV. If you complete all six Foundation modules you will get a Certificate of Contextual Leadership which is equivalent to a two-day leadership course. In some specialties this will give you an extra point, but in all cases, it will give you something to talk about at interview.

What is the time commitment for enhance? How will I find the time?

Enhance enable takes about 4-6 hours per module to complete. The work involves a mixture of self-directed learning through reading, videos, podcasts etc., formal learning through lectures (such as F1 teaching) or ward-based learning and also work-based activities which can be done as part of your job. Most people find that this is a really good use of protected self-development time, giving a structure and a focus to that time.

How do I add my enhance learning evidence to the e-portfolio?

There is a guide (co-written with Foundation doctors) about adding evidence to Horus in the documents on this website. There are also step-by-step videos available on the enhance Learning Hub.

Where does my supervisor get guidance about the enhance programme?

There are guides for supervisors on the national enhance website and on the enhance Learning Hub Your regional Enhance FTPD will also be able to provide bespoke support for your supervisor if needed.

Some people I know are doing a PG Certificate related to enhance. How do I get to do this?

If you are interested in doing a PG Certificate related to enhance, please email hyp-tr.enhance.yorkshire@nhs.net for more information. There is no funding available for PG Certification at Foundation level, so you will have to find your own funding (currently approx. £3400). The actual enhance programme is free.

How do I sign up for the enhance programme?

Visit the enhance Learning Hub and download the module you wish to do.

Please inform your Foundation Administrator within the Trust that you are doing the programme and which module you are working on. This will help them to let you know about any support, resources or opportunities available to help you, and means that your FTPD knows what you are doing. Letting the Foundation team know you are doing a module does not mean you are obliged to finish it!

Some Trusts will organise information and sign-up sessions which create a peer support group for enhance.

Who do I talk to about enhance explore?

If you are interested in the enhance explore programme please hyp-tr.enhance.yorkshire@nhs.net for more information or see our explore webpage Generalism Enhance Enhancing Generalist Skills – Yorkshire and the Humber.

Where do I get the materials and workbooks for enhance enable?

Visit the enhance Learning Hub for all the enhance enable workbooks. There are also resources on there (such as videos, VR resources and e-learning) to support your learning. You will need to create an account or use your e-Learning for Health log-in to gain access.

Can I continue this enhance learning into F3 or ST1/CT1?

Yes. We would recommend completing the Foundation workbooks in F3 or ST1/CT1, as these will give you the Certificate of Contextual Leadership, but there are post-Foundation/multiprofessional workbooks for higher grades available on the enhance Learning Hub. You may also want to consider enhance explore in your post-Foundation years.

Where can I get more information about enhance?
