Foundation Priority Programmes (FPP)

Foundation Priority Programmes (FPP) have been developed to support specific areas of the UK that have historically found it difficult to attract and retain trainees through the foundation and specialty recruitment processes. The main aim is to maximise the opportunity for applicants who wish to be located in less popular areas and therefore improve supply for specialty training and beyond. These programmes also often offer a range of incentives, such as additional educational opportunities in digital innovation, leadership opportunities, medical education and SIM training for example.

As part of this process, applicants will have the opportunity to rank individual priority programmes that have been determined by a specific location, as part of the application form and prior to national allocation to FP. Successful applicants will be offered specific programmes prior to national allocation to foundation schools.

YHFS has 25 FPP posts. 6 Generalism posts in EY, 15 GP LIFT posts (9 in SY, 6 in WY), 3 Artificial Intelligence Posts in Leeds, 1 SIM post in EY

Once you have been nominated and have registered on Oriel, or deemed eligible by the UKFPO’s Eligibility Office, you will need to search for and apply to the Foundation Programme (FP) vacancy.

You should then search for and apply to the national vacancy for Foundation Priority Programmes (FPP). Applicants will be asked to rank programmes as part of the application form. You should rank only the programmes you wish to be considered for, i.e. those in a particular region. Programmes you would not accept should be listed in the ‘not wanted’ column.

Any applicant who has applied to FP can apply for FPP, i.e. all nominated or eligible applicants.

Applicants will be ranked using the new Preference Informed Allocation (PIA) process and will be allocated a different computer generated number to their Foundation Programme allocation for this vacancy.

Please note that while we normally support Less Than Full Time (LTFT) applications for all of our programmes, because of the way the FPP posts are configured it makes it very difficult to allow trainees to be LTFT. There is time out of clinical training already due to these posts having a Longitudinal Integrated Foundation Training (LIFT) element e.g. GP LIFT has 1 day a week in a GP practice.

Generalism Posts (EY)

The 2021 UK Chief Medical Officer's report confirmed the importance of enhancing generalist skills in managing complex multi-morbidity and reducing health inequalities. The 2023 Long Term Workforce Plan set out the intention for the Enhance programme to be available for all doctors in training, with basic generalist skills teaching for all Foundation doctors, and additional training at a deeper level for those doctors with a demonstrable interest in generalist care. These posts will allow such doctors to experience an immersive, innovative, fun and challenging multi-professional generalist skills training programme alongside their standard placements, and hopefully improve retention within the local area where this programme is active amongst health and social care teams.

In FY1, trainees will have a day release per week to undertake the multi-professional Enhance explore professional development programme within the Humber region. In FY2 the trainees will continue with the day release programme, but be embedded in a community or other generalist placement (such as GP, public health, palliative care etc.) to apply these generalist principles to practice. These placements will support the rural, remote and coastal agenda as well as the ambitions of the Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care System.

We have 3 programmes based in Hull for 2 years and 3 programmes rotating between Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (FY1) and Hull (FY2).

For further information about these posts please see the Generalism Page or contact Helen Cattermole, regional Enhance programme lead Helen.Cattermole3@nhs.net.

SIM Post (EY)

Simulation remains an important part of the Foundation curriculum and this was reinforced during the Foundation review process of 2019. In FY2, the trainee will have a day release, on a weekly basis, to design, facilitate and evaluate simulation methodology in the teaching and training of Foundation doctors. The successful appointee will work with 2 deputy directors of simulation who work within the trust. There will also be supported additional study leave to attend simulation national conference

We have 1 SIM post available. FY1 is in Scunthorpe and FY2 is in Hull

AI LIFT posts (WY)

In 2024 we introduced 3 new Artificial Intelligence posts, based for 2 years in Leeds. The UK government has estimated that within the next 20 years 90% of all jobs will require some element of digital skills. Within the NHS alone, NHS England predicts that the clinical informatics workforce will need to grow by around 10,000 in the next 5 years. The 2019 Topol review produced several recommendations to address digital skills shortages within the medical workforce. This report in particular recommends the need to increase the delivery of data science training to clinicians through formal training, and dedicated protected time. This rotation is designed to deliver a training programme that meets these needs, accredited against national competencies and is delivered by expert clinical informaticians and leading academics. It will represent the first foundation programme rotation of its kind anywhere in the UK.

The Faculty of Clinical Informatics (FCI) is the multi-disciplinary professional body for all health and social care qualified individuals working as informaticians across the UK. The FCI have developed a core competency framework for clinical informatics and have already agreed with the course leads to develop a process to accredit this foundation programme rotation against the relevant competencies of this framework. This would be the first rotation of its kind and the first to be FCI accredited.
