Radiology in York District Hospital


York Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprises eight hospital sites, employs over 8,500 staff and serves a population of between 300,000 and 800,000 depending upon specialty.  There are comprehensive imaging facilities in the Departments at York and Scarborough. The service is delivered by 25 consultant radiologists supported by trainees from both the Leeds/Bradford and Hull training schemes. Attachments are available at core and special interest levels and there is the ability to accommodate FIT. Trainee feedback is very positive and several trainees have enjoyed the experience so much that they have come back as consultants. 

York Hospital is a well-equipped modern hospital and combined with Scarborough have approximately 1,100 beds (including day case). York Hospital has recently undergone major redevelopments including, surgical facilities increasing theatre, day unit and short stay capacity.  Other developments include a combined Haematology and Oncology Outpatient Centre new Head and Neck outpatient and treatment facilities. The radiology department houses 3 CT scanners, 2 MRI scanners, 5 ultrasound rooms, integrated breast unit, a purpose built vascular intervention lab and a recently converted hybrid theatre room.

York Hospital is one of the two main teaching hospitals of the Hull and York Medical School.   The new Gillespie Building, built at the hospital, provides new and improved teaching facilities for undergraduate students.  This building also houses a comprehensive research and development function that provides a service across North Yorkshire.

York is a richly historic city with a population of around 180,000.  It has two highly-rated universities and a law college.  There are excellent road and rail links to surrounding towns and cities as well as easy access to the Yorkshire Moors, Dales and East Coast.  In addition, London is accessible by train in less than 2 hours.
