DFT Regional Schemes.
There are 8 schemes within the Yorkshrie and the Humber Dental Foundation Training.
The JDFCT Scheme is an innovative and transformative educational program that seamlessly integrates Primary Care Dental Practice and Secondary Care Hospital placements over a dynamic two-year period.
This unique structure not only presents a range of challenges but also fosters valuable synergies, cultivating clinicians who are exceptionally well-rounded, resilient and equipped to tackle the evolving landscape of dental care.
Ian Wilson, as the Programme Director oversees the scheme. He has extensive experience in UK General Practice, international work, and community outreach to marginalised populations which enrich the program's vision.
Ian alongside other colleagues within Dental Foundation Training have extensive experience in coaching and Emotional Intelligence within the workplace, empowering future dental professionals to thrive in their careers.

The NY1 scheme has practices in the North Yorkshire and sometimes the northern West Yorkshire area. The scheme has a group of dedicated Educational Supervisors who are committed to providing Foundation Dentists with a supportive introduction to general dental practice. Face to face Study Days are held mostly in Leeds.

How does the NY2 Scheme run?
The NY2 Scheme covers the a large geographical area in Yorkshire currently including practices in: Great Ayton , Harrogate, York, Wetherby, Scarborough and Hunmanby on the East Coast.
We have a group of dedicated trainers who are committed to providing trainees with a great introduction to working in general dental practice.
Study days are held online and can also be joint with the other schemes in the Deanery working across Yorkshire.
Study days are not fixed to a particular day of the week.
The scheme uses peer review and hands-on sessions as part of its training.
We are committed to targeting specific educational needs and personalizing training events in order to make the study day programme relevant to each individual.
We also offer FDs the opportunity to manage a project in the wider community.
DFT can provide new graduates with a broad overview of career choices and a good understanding of the NHS system.

The NY2 scheme is run by Isobel Greenstreet (i.greenstreet@nhs.net) who has had many years experience as an Educational Supervisor and working in NHS Dental Practice.

How is the WY3 Scheme run?
The Dewsbury scheme is spread across training practices mainly around Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield. The DF1 study days are most often held on Fridays, at the Oakwell Centre at Dewsbury District Hospital. There are a variety of away days throughout the year to help trainees broaden their experience.
Who runs the Dewsbury Scheme?
The scheme’s director is Tony Kilcoyne. He has over 30 years’ experience training undergraduates and postgraduates. He has served as an appointed dental member of the GDC, a Board BDA Director, teaches many educational courses locally and nationally, covering areas such as advanced Restorative treatments, Practice Management, the Psychology of patient care and Emotional Intelligence. Tony is also a Specialist in Prosthodontics (Crowns, Bridges, Implants, Dentures etc) and runs his own specialist dental practice.
Tony's philosophy is to help trainees achieve their best and challenge them to become thinking dentists for the 21st Century.

WY4 covers the M62 belt south of Leeds and Bradford and practices linked to the scheme cover a large geographical area.
Yorkshire & Humber DFT is organised centrally, so, you will share some study days with some or all of the other Yorkshire schemes. The WY4 study days are based in Leeds.
Mark McAlister is the TPD for WY4 and is an experienced dentist who has a keen interest in education, endodontics and all aspects of dentistry. We aim to support and develop FDs in an environment where they can explore their knowledge and progress their skills.

The study days are generally, but not exclusively, held in Sheffield. We have access to the clinical skill facility at the University Of Sheffield School Of Clinical Dentistry and the Medical Emergency Simulation centre in Mexborough.
The General Dental Practices are usually grouped around Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley. Most practices are normally within easy commuting distance of Sheffield.
Our aim is to help the new graduate to apply and develop the knowledge and experience gained at Dental School to the workplace. Working together on the study day programme adds to the enjoyment of the year and deepens the learning experienced in the workplace.

The Sheffield scheme is run by Craig Smith who has many years experience as a Trainer and running his own busy Dental Practice.

How does the SY7 Scheme run?
The General Dental Practices in this scheme tend to be grouped around Rotherham, Sheffield, and Doncaster. Most practices are normally within easy commuting distance of Sheffield. Study days vary in their location many being in central Leeds and Sheffield whilst a few use our blackboard learning pages and collaborate for online sessions. Scheme days tend to occur closely alongside other South Yorkshire schemes.
Our aim is to help the new graduate to apply and develop the knowledge and experience gained at Dental School to the workplace. Working together on the study day programme adds to the enjoyment of the year and deepens the learning experienced in the workplace.

The SY7 scheme is run by Matthew Milbourn who has had many years’ experience as a Trainer and works in an NHS dental Practice in the area too.
