Paediatrics ST1 & ST2
Paediatrics in Yorkshire and the Humber
We are delighted to tell you that we can offer virtually every facet of paediatric medicine within our training programme, including working in one of the few stand alone children’s hospitals. We have around 10% of the English population, about 5.2 million people, within our catchment area. We can also offer you access to the UK coastline (including Whitby, the village where Dracula landed in the UK), big city life (we have a branch of the Bank of England, not that they have any money at the moment), moorland walks (and it snows every year, the sledging is awesome), climbing at Stanage Edge, cycling up and down monster hills (on and off road), afternoon tea in Betty’s Tea Rooms - Harrogate (possibly the most posh tea room in the country) and no congestion charges!
The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has a defined curriculum for training, which runs for a notional 8 years. This is split in to 3 levels.
Level one is ST1 to ST3. During these 3 years we have a day release education programme that maps the college curriculum and is designed to build toward success in the college examinations. These three years will consist of at least 6 months in a tertiary neonatal unit, at least 6 months of subspecialty exposure, at least 6 months of general paediatrics in a smaller/medium sized unit, at least 6 months of general paediatrics in a larger/medium sized unit.
Level two consists of ST4 and ST5. This will consist of 6 months neonatal medicine in a tertiary centre, 6 months community paediatrics, 12 months of general paediatrics. During this time you will be given the opportunity to attend the day release course that can lead to a Masters in Child Health.
Level 3 is ST6 an above is level 3. This is consolidation of general paediatric experience and/or sub speciality training. We can offer subspecialty training in respiratory medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hepatology, nutrition, intensive care, nephrology, neurology, neurodisability, oncology, neonatology, cardiology, rheumatology, and emergency medicine. As well as experience in infectious diseases, metabolic medicine, community, child protection, child and adolescent mental health, public health, research and education. Please see our main deanery pages on for a full explanation of this: national grid and ST6 page. We are not interested in turning out carbon copy pediatricians. We would be delighted to engage you in service developments, to listen to your ideas on taking time out of programme. We will support overseas experience, research time and periods in other regions to gain additional experience not available locally (eg some transplantation medicine, or ECMO). We also have a scholarship for the Tropical Medicine Diploma available every year.
We are supportive of part time training. All part time doctors are in job slots/shares with another part time doctor, except in exceptional circumstances. Your job slot partner may change every six month or may remain constant for many years depending on training needs.
You could go explore the deanery web site further. You could look at the hospital’s websites. There is also more information on the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health website.
In order to assess your suitability for this training programme please refer to the national Person Specifications on the Specialty Training website.
The expected duration of this training programme is 8 years from ST1 level, subject to satisfactory progression. The actual duration may depend on the circumstances of individual trainees.

Training Locations
The Yorkshire and the Humber region has three rotations (West, South and East), which each can provide all the experience needed for level 1 and 2 training. While trainees mostly train in their own locations, there may be occasions where trainees are temporarily placed in other area to enable them to pursue individual training interests.
The school provides teaching across the region and trainees have opportunity to access this in different locations.
The East of the Yorkshire and Humber region:
The East of the region has the following hospital placements:
- Grimsby
- Harrogate
- Hull
- Scarborough
- Scunthorpe
- York
These are all busy departments that provide good clinical training. In particular Harrogate, Scunthorpe and Grimsby consistently have had good trainee feedback in recent surveys and there is access to external training for all placements. To keep travel times to a minimum we have divided the East region into a North-East and South –East rotation as detailed below:
This table applies to the ST1 posts advertised. ST2s will be placed according to their training needs.
The following Hospital Placements are in the West of the region:
- Bradford
- Calderdale (based in Halifax)
- Dewsbury
- Leeds General Infirmary
- Leeds St James
- Pinderfields
- Pontefract
The following Hospital Placements are in the South of the region:
- Barnsley
- Bassetlaw
- Doncaster
- Jessop Wing
- Rotherham
- Sheffield Children’s Hospital
The South and West hospitals do not have fixed rotations at present but trainees will be asked for their preferences once a year. There will be opportunity to work in other areas of the region as required for training. We have pan-deanery and cardiology interest posts and these are usually allocated by need or by competitive interview.
