It is essential that opportunities to gain competence in the required practical procedures are actively sought from an early stage in core medical training. In order to help you gain the required procedural competencies there are a number of procedure specific courses available for IM trainees. These include:
- Intercostal chest drain insertion
- Central line insertion
- Abdominal Paracentesis
- Lumber puncture
Procedural competence must be demonstrated via your e-portfolio as a direct observation of procedure skill (DOPS). It is the trainee’s responsibility to arrange this with an appropriate assessor trained and competent in the relevant procedure.
