Oral Medicine.

Oral Medicine concerns the oral health care of patients with chronic, recurrent and medically related disorders of the oral and maxillofacial region. The key difference from either the specialties of Oral Surgery or Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is that the emphasis in Oral Medicine is on conditions that are primarily managed without the need for surgery. The scope of Oral Medicine practice includes oral mucosal conditions, salivary gland disease and chronic orofacial pain with some conditions reflecting an oral manifestation of an underlying systemic problem.

Trainees appointed to North Yorkshire

There are close working relationships with the University of Leeds and wide-ranging opportunities for research in the specialty. Application can be made to Health Education England working across Yorkshire and the Humber to take time out of the specialty training programme to allow a period of formal research training.  A period of research is not a requirement of specialty training in Oral Medicine although trainees have to reach the outcomes with respect to critical appraisal of research studies of relevance to Oral Medicine clinical practice.

Testimonial

Testimonial from former trainee:

"I am very fortunate to train in oral medicine at Leeds Dental Institute! It is a very excellent training in terms of content. The catchment area is wide thus provide and wide range of case mixes. Attending specialist clinics like dermatology and Rheumatology also helped to broaden my range of knowledge for specialist oral medicine career. Most importantly is the support from Health Education England working across Yorkshire and the Humber at all stages of my training; coupled with excellent training environment within the department. I had second to none opportunities and relished every moment of my training!"
