The College is implementing a number of changes to the examination structure, with effect from August 2016, mapped to the Emergency Medicine 2015 Curriculum.

The College will continue to offer a range of examinations leading to the award of Membership (MRCEM) or Fellowship (FRCEM) of the College but the two separate sets of examinations for MRCEM and FRCEM are being updated and merged to create a single suite of examinations.  Successful completion of all components will lead to the award of Fellowship of the College (FRCEM).  Candidates who do not wish to complete the entire suite of examinations remain able to obtain Membership by Examination (MRCEM).

A number of these changes came into effect from August 2016 whilst others are being phased in over the next two years to permit trainees and other examination candidates the opportunity to complete the existing suite of examinations.

From August 2016, the Fellowship examination consisted of the following components:

  • FRCEM Primary Examination
  • FRCEM Intermediate Certificate:
    • Short Answer Question Paper
    • Situational Judgement Paper (introduced from Autumn 2017)
  • FRCEM Final Examination:
    • Critical Appraisal (Short Answer Question Paper)
    • Clinical Topic Review/Quality Improvement Project (with viva)
    • Management Viva
    • Clinical Short Answer Question Paper
    • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

From August 2018, the Fellowship examination will consist of the following components:

  • FRCEM Primary Examination
  • FRCEM Intermediate Certificate:
    • Short Answer Question Paper
    • Situational Judgement Paper
  • FRCEM Final Examination:
    • Critical Appraisal (Short Answer Question Paper)
    • Quality Improvement Project (QIP)
    • Clinical Short Answer Question Paper
    • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

The College continues to offer Membership by Examination (MRCEM) for candidates who have passed all of the following examinations:

  • FRCEM Primary (or MRCEM Part A between 1 August 2012 and 1 August 2016 or granted exemption)
  • FRCEM Intermediate SAQ (or MRCEM Part B between 1 August 2012 and 1 August 2016)
  • MRCEM OSCE (previously called Part C.  Passed after 1 August 2012)
