Workforce, training and education
Yorkshire and Humber

DFT Regional Schemes.

Health Education England working across Yorkshire and the Humber organises 8 schemes for Dental Foundation trainees within the region of Sheffield, Doncaster, Harrogate, Dewsbury, Barnsley Wakefield and York.  The JDFCT scheme covers the Yorkshire and Humber area.

JDFCT

The JDFCT Scheme is a unique combination of Secondary care Hospital posts and Primary care Dental Practice posts, alternated in the one educational programme over a 2 year period. It brings with it many challenges but also synergies, to produce a very well rounded and experienced Clinician, prepared for the future challenges and developments in dental care.

The Programme Director for the JDFCT scheme is Jason Atkinson who has a wealth of experience in General Practice, as an experienced TPD and an innovator in educational thinking and application.

WY3

How is the WY3 (Dewsbury) Scheme run?

The Dewsbury scheme is spread across training practices mainly around Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield. The DF1 study days are most often held on Fridays, at the Oakwell Centre at Dewsbury District Hospital. There are a variety of away days throughout the year to help trainees broaden their experience.

Who runs the Dewsbury Scheme?

The scheme’s director is Tony Kilcoyne. He has over 30 years’ experience training undergraduates and postgraduates. He has served as an appointed dental member of the GDC, a Board BDA Director, teaches many educational courses locally and nationally, covering areas such as advanced Restorative treatments, Practice Management, the Psychology of patient care and Emotional Intelligence. Tony is also a Specialist in Prosthodontics (Crowns, Bridges, Implants, Dentures etc) and runs his own specialist dental practice.

Tony's philosophy is to help trainees achieve their best and challenge them to become thinking dentists for the 21st Century.

"With Foundation Training, you will get out of it what you put into it personally and professionally. I have been very proud to have been involved long enough to see foundation dentists who have come through their training here in Yorkshire and have gone on to establish great professional careers elsewhere in the UK."

SY7

How does the SY7 (Doncaster) Scheme run?

The study days are generally, but not exclusively, held in Sheffield.  We have access to the clinical skill facility at the University Of Sheffield School Of Clinical Dentistry and the Medical Emergency Simulation centre in Mexborough.

The General Dental Practices are usually grouped around Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley.  Most practices are normally within easy commuting distance of Sheffield.

Our aim is to help the new graduate to apply and develop the knowledge and experience gained at Dental School to the workplace. Working together on the study day programme adds to the enjoyment of the year and deepens the learning experienced in the workplace.

Who runs the Scheme?

The Doncaster scheme is run by Matthew Milbourn who has had many years’ experience as a Trainer and working in NHS dental Practice too.
