Study Leave

Study leave is approved by the respective TPDs in-charge of trainees.

TPD: General Surgery ST3-4 Sushil Maslekar sushil.maslekar@nhs.net
TPD: General Surgery ST5-6 Miss Antonia Durham-Hall Antonia.Durham-Hall@nhs.net
TPD: General Surgery ST7-8 Mr Andrew Wyman andrew.wyman@sth.nhs.uk

All requests must be made at least 6 weeks prior to the event. Retrospective requests will not be funded and your trust will deduct the leave from your annual leave entitlement.

Your leave request should be signed by your current AES and indicate how much leave you have already had that year, there is no-where on the form for this information so it should either be added on the bottom or ideally in a cover letter.

All requests will be considered individually however these are some general guidelines:

  • A wide range or courses are now delivered within the deanery.  Requests for local courses are more likely to be supported; these are both cheaper and often require less leave.
  • Funding for attending conferences is only likely to be granted for the 1st author giving an oral presentation.
  • Non-UK conferences are only eligible for a nominal contribution of £250, even if you are presenting.
  • The deanery cannot partially fund leave so if your request is not deemed to be appropriate / good value for money you may receive no funding.
  • All requests that exceed £1000 will need approval from the Head of School.

More information can be found within the study leave guidance.

Leave is requested using the Study leave form downloadable from the above link
