School of Public Health

The ambition of our school is to train aspiring individuals to become formally accredited Public Health Specialists with the knowledge, skills and attitude to be leaders in health and social care, and who are competent and instrumental in delivering activities to improve health, prevent disease, and tackle inequalities in health.

To achieve our ambition, we aim to:

  1. Maintain standards of professional practice defined by the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) and General Medical Council (GMC).
  2. Deliver the FPH curriculum through relevant, yet diverse and flexible training (for details, see FPH)
  3. Contribute to improving health and tackling inequalities across Yorkshire and the Humber through the work of our trainees
  4. Continuously improve the quality and effectiveness of all public health staff, in particular those contributing to the programme as trainers and supervisors

Delivery of our training programme is led by Head of School, Val Barker, and Training Programme Directors, Susan Hird and Shirley Brierley along with support from educational, academic and project supervisors across the region. Training is mainly provided through placements at a variety of locations, including local authorities throughout Yorkshire, regional universities, Public Health England, healthcare organisations and other opportunities out of the region. More details of these placements can be found in the "Training and education" section of the "Current registrars" tab.
