Curriculum Delivery.

Resource Allocation

The School of Pathology recognises that some curriculum delivery (previously know as study leave) is not immediately available from within the training programmes delivered within Yorkshire and Humber. It follows that external courses, attachments and teaching is likely to be required/accessed by trainees variably in order to provide progress towards CCT.

The Training Programme Directors (TPDs) in 2010 drew up a list of training elements that are often needed for progression towards CCT, as laid out below.  These courses were designated either essential or desirable. It is unlikely that any one trainee would need every one of the courses, but review of progress at ARCP will guide strategic applications for the year ahead.

The School of Pathology will support trainee financial claims for access to these courses.

The application form for such leave must be signed off by the Programme Director/Deputy (but not by educational supervisors/clinical supervisors). Those courses within the list below may be accessed without difficulty, but must still seek appropriate sign off. Please use the HEE application form and refer to the full guidance here.

Courses that are not on this list may be accessible providing that a case can be made for the educational need, with identification of which courses are not likely to be taken up as a consequence. These will be reviewed on a case by case basis by the TPDs and Head of School.

There are meetings held by the Yorkshire Laboratory Medicine Discussion Group (YLMDG) and the Association of Clinical Biochemistry (ACB). The ACB also supports trainees with courses and training days specifically mapped to those areas of the curriculum that may be difficult for trainees to meet in routine clinical practice. In addition, there is an annual management course which most trainees will attend at least once during their training, which is useful both for examinations and for interviews when applying for Consultant jobs.
