Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgery has recently separated from general surgery and offers an exciting and rewarding career in a rapidly evolving acute speciality. Training in Yorkshire & the Humber is delivered in specialist centres and offers the full breadth of experience required to progress in this technically demanding speciality. There is a well received teaching programme including simulator workshops and cadaveric operating days.

Yorkshire trainees are exposed to large volumes of open and endovascular procedures and have good access to research opportunities through the academic units located in Hull, Leeds and Sheffield. Trainees are encouraged take time out to study for an MD, PhD or other higher qualification if they wish. Trainees who wish to pursue an academic career have the option of applying for an ACL post

Currently trainees spend their ST3 year in GI surgery gaining the required general surgical competencies. ST4 is the first placement in a vascular unit and may include further general surgery on call if required. Trainees in ST4-ST8 will rotate through the vascular centres in Bradford/Calderdale, Doncaster, Hull, Leeds, Sheffield and York. All placements include access to open surgery, endovascular sessions, clinics and exposure to acute vascular emergency work. Rotations are not fixed, they are tailored to individual needs, progression and career aspirations.

All trainees have the opportunity to undertake a postgraduate certificate in vascular ultrasound as part of the training programme.

We have well established links with units in Canada, Australia and India and many trainees have taken the opportunity of a fellowship to broaden their clinical experience.

We have enthusiastic educational and clinical supervisors who actively participate in training and we believe in twice yearly ARCP’s to keep the programme responsive to trainee’s needs. We have experience of delivering less than full time training and are happy to discuss this as and when required.

Interested in vascular surgery in Yorkshire but not sure?

Why not contact the TPD or a member of the STC? We can arrange an informal meeting, visit to a unit or a taster day. It is also possible to come along to teaching sessions such as the cadaveric operating or simulator workshop. The Yorkshire vascular forum is another opportunity to come to a local meeting and meet local trainers and trainees.
