Curriculum Delivery and Teaching

The Core Surgery teaching programme includes an bootcamp induction, monthly regional teaching days, and an annual Trainees Day, as well as the annual School of Surgery Conference.

The regional teaching days include technical skills and non-technical skills sessions and lectures relating to the core surgery curriculum. The monthly regional teaching days are run at three centres, giving trainees a choice of three dates/centres to attend. Trainees should normally attend the teaching day at the centre in their subregion (West, East, South) but if this clashes with on call commitments or study/annual leave they may book to attend at another centre. Trainees should only attend one teaching day per month, with the exception of the Trainees' Day and the School of Surgery Conference which are in addition to the monthly teaching days.

For a successful ARCP, 70% teaching attendence is required. This equates to 9 out of 12 sessions over the year, including the monthly regional teaching days, the Trainees' Day and the School of Surgery Conference. Attendence cannot be 'made up' by repeating the monthly teaching day at another centre.

If you are having difficulty attending teaching days due to service commitments within your trust, please contact your Educational Supervisor, College Tutor or Training Programme Director.

Teaching Programme

Course details and booking for teaching days is available through the school Maxcourse site.

Learning resources and webinars that are part of the teaching programme are available through the school Blackboard site.

A series of skills videos are also hosted on the Simulation Skills page on this site.

Information about eSurgery, provided by e-Learning for Health, is available on our e-learning page.

Booking

Advanced booking for teaching days through Maxcourse is essential. This is so that the appropriate number of models, equipment and disposables can be ordered. Spaces are limited according to the capacity at Medical Education Centres and booking is on a first come first serve basis. Attendance without prior booking may result in trainees being turned away.

Trainees must ensure that they also book study leave early in order to be able to attend. Please do not book onto a session that is preceded by a night shift, as you will not be able participate fully in the teaching and will be breaching the Working Time Regulations.

When attending please allow plenty of time to travel to the centre, and familarise yourself with the address and directions on Maxcourse in advance. If you are late to arrive, you may be turned away.

Cancellation

If you book a session but you are no longer able to attend, please cancel your booking on Maxcourse. Please cancel as soon as possible when you find that you are unable to attend, so that your place can be made available for other trainees. If you are cancelling within 7 days of the course, please email surgeryevents.yh@hee.nhs.uk to cancel. Outside of exceptional circumstances, trainees should avoid cancelling on the day of the course. However, if you need to cancel on the day of the course, please contact the Medical Education Centre or organiser directly.
