Psychiatry School Conference 2017 - Building for the Future: Driving Quality and Safety through Education

This year’s Psychiatry School Conference was entitled 'Building for the Future: Driving Quality and Safety through Education'and was held at The Britannia Royal Hotel, Hull on Friday 17th November 2017.

The conference was well attended with over 100 junior doctors, trainers, administrators and consultants, allowing a great opportunity for networking.

Speakers

Alan Currie - Consultant Psychiatrist MB ChB, MPhil, FRCPsych

Dr Currie is a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Regional Affective Disorders Service, a lecturer at Newcastle University and a visiting professor at the University of Sunderland in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science.

His research interests include eating disorders, recovery, social inclusion, mood disorders and movement disorders and he has published in all these areas including co-editing and authoring several chapters in Social Inclusion and Mental Health (2010). He has published on a range of sports psychiatry topics including editing an award-winning handbook of Sports Psychiatry for clinicians and overseeing the 2007 UK Sport guidelines on eating disorders.

He is an active member and fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.  For 4 years he sat on the executive of the General & Community faculty and in the last 5 years he has organised 5 symposia on sports psychiatry topics at the Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress.

 

Dr Katherine Britowe - Research Associate at King's College London

Katherine graduated with a BA (Hons) in English Language and Linguistics, from the University of Wales, Bangor (2000). She then went on to complete an MA in Linguistic Studies (2004), and a PhD in Linguistics (2010), both at the University of Essex. Her PhD thesis was a linguistic analysis of outpatient plastic surgery consultations in a teaching hospital, with a particular focus on consultations with multiple health professionals present.

In 2010, Katherine started work on a project looking to improve the care for people living with renal disease approaching the end of life (The Advanced Renal Care Project). In 2012, she moved to the AMBER care bundle evaluation project. This project was a comparative observational study of the AMBER care bundle, which was designed to improve care for people who are deteriorating, clinically unstable, with limited reversibility and at risk of dying in the next 1-2 months. In 2014, she commenced work on the ACCESSCare study, looking to improve the care for people who identify as LGBT and who are facing the later stages of a life limiting illness. In 2016, she joined the OACC (Outcome Assessment and Complexity Collaborative) team as Project Manager, to oversee the two research studies running alongside OACC, looking at the implementation and effects of outcome measures in palliative care.

 

Dr Wendy Burn - Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist

Wendy Burn became a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist in Leeds in West Yorkshire in 1990 and currently works fulltime in a community post. Her  service is responsible for a large number of patients with dementia at all stages of the illness as well as elderly people with a range of psychiatric problems. She has worked closely with the Alzheimer’s Society and is a Clinical Lead for Dementia in the Yorkshire Strategic Clinical Network. In this role she is involved in a number of projects to improve the standard of care for people with dementia.

She has been involved in the organisation and delivery of postgraduate training since she started as a consultant. She has held many roles in Education including College Tutor, Training Programme Director, Director of Postgraduate Medical Education, Chair of Specialty Training committee and Associate Medical Director for Doctors in Training. She set up the Yorkshire School of Psychiatry and was the first Head of School.

 

Professor Dame Sue Bailey

Dame Susan Mary Bailey, DBE, FRCPsych is a British psychiatrist and academic who specialises in children's mental health. Since 2004, she has been Professor of Child Mental Health at the University of Central Lancashire. From 2011 to 2014, she was President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Since January 2015, she has been Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.

 

The next Psychiatry School Conference will be held on Friday 16th November 2018. Details for which will be released in due course.
