School Induction
Induction for new entrants to the School is held in August and February.
Trust Induction
You will receive induction in your local Trust. Please contact them to find out the induction dates before you start and ensure that you attend.
Other things you must do:
- Complete and submit a Form R Part A
- Complete a learning agreement with your Educational Supervisor
- Register with the Royal College of Psychiatrists
- Register with the college as a Pre-Membership Psychiatric Trainee.
- Once you have done this, register yourself with Portfolio Online so you can start doing WPBAs (as these can only be done online).
- Get to grips with the Core Curriculum. This will inform your learning objectives and should be used as a basis for your portfolio.
- You need to start doing Workplace Based Assessments as soon as possible as you will need to have the right number for the ARCP.
- Find out if there is a Psychotherapy case discussion group (sometimes called a Balint group) in your area. You will need to attend the group for a whole year and it is recommended that you do this in CT1 so get yourself signed up.
- You will usually be sent your registration form for MRCPsych Course automatically. Make sure that you are signed up to it.
- You will need to attend a Conflict Resolution (aka Managing Violence and Aggression) training as soon as possible. If this is not part of your induction sign yourself onto a local course (all trusts will have one that is free for employees).
- Make sure you have a timetable detailing case conferences and journal clubs for the term.
- Check the mini-PAT (360 degree feedback) dates and sign up for 2 rounds for the year. This means you won’t have to worry about it later.
- You will need to complete at least one audit every year of your training, so start thinking early about what you would like to do.
- You will need to keep up your BLS competency, so make sure that you’re booked onto a course during the year.
- Remember that you will be expected to have seen a psychotherapy case by the end of CT2. If you have finished attending a case discussion group get yourself signed up to a supervision group as soon as possible. Remember long cases can take up to a year to complete.
- You will need to keep your BLS and Conflict resolution up to date – make sure you book yourself on refresher courses.
- You will be starting to sit exams at this stage and a pass in paper 1 will be required to progress to CT3.
- You will need to complete an audit, and in the next year you will need to show completion of an audit loop, so have a think about how this can be achieved.
- Exams are likely to take up a lot of your time and you will need to achieve membership before progressing to ST4.
- You will be expected to see a second case for psychotherapy but in a different modality, so make sure you sign yourself up for a different supervision group as early as possible.
- You will be expected to show that you have completed an audit loop.
- You will need to keep your BLS and Conflict resolution training up to date, so make sure you book yourself on the refresher courses.
- If you are likely to be progressing to ST4 you need to book yourself on a Section 12 course. Occasionally subsidised places are available through Health Education England working across Yorkshire and the Humber, or you can do them locally. You will need Section 12 approval when you start as an ST4.
- Think about what you may want to do with your Study/Research time at ST4-6. If you want to apply to a Masters course, you will need to apply before you finish CT3.
- Get to grips with the appropriate advanced curriculum modules. This should inform your learning objectives for the next three years.
- Join a CPD group. Higher trainees will be expected to create a CPD (Continuing Professional Development) plan which is approved by a group of their peers and also their Educational Supervisor. The CPD group is also expected to monitor whether trainees are achieving their objectives.
- ARCP guidelines are now also available for higher trainees.
