Regional Training Days
Regional training days are held monthly for Geriatric Medicine trainees (usually the last Wednesday of the month; no meeting in August). The venue varies from month to month, rotating through different hospitals in the region.
The aims of the training days are to provide deeper knowledge of curriculum areas, aid preparation for the Specialty Certificate Examination, allow registrars to meet and work together, and to raise the profile of research in the region and encourage registrar involvement.
Each training day typically covers one or two themes, covering a particular area of the curriculum in the form of lectures, workshops or small group work. They include trainee led sessions for which there is a timetable allocating trainees to dates. This could be a presentation relating to a specific area of the topic of the day, a case presentation or journal review etc. and should be agreed with the organiser of the meeting in advance.
Of the eleven training days, two are merged with the British Geriatric Society regional meetings (usually the March and September dates) organised by Dr Abhay Das (abhay.das@midyorks.nhs.uk).
Trainees are required to attend at least 70% of the training days, including at least one regional BGS meeting per year. Queries and apologies should be directed to Yvonne Sherrard (y.sherrard@nhs.net) who maintains the list of trainee emails and collates attendance information. Please let Yvonne know well in advance (at least one week) regarding planned attendance.

The training schedule is mapped to the curriculum so that all topics are covered over a three year cycle, allowing ample opportunity for trainees to receive training in each area. The training is usually held on alternate months and rotates between Sheffield and each district hospital on the training rotation.
Trainees are expected to be involved in organising the training days and in presenting at some. The training is MDT based and encompasses input from allied health professionals as well as medics. Consultants are welcome to attend but the training is specifically directed at the registrars. Once a year there is a research forum run by the lead clinician for research in Sheffield. Here, trainees present recent research and quality improvement work.
70% of the training days must be attended. Trainees are also encouraged to attend the regional BGS meetings, one of which is included in the training programme on an annual basis.
