  Why choose Yorkshire?

Within the Yorkshire and Humber region you will find everything from vibrant city centres and historical market towns, to rolling hills with drystone walls, bleak moorlands, cosy pubs, medieval castles, dramatic coastlines and ruined abbeys.

Trainees are allocated rotations in either the East/West Yorkshire area or the South Yorkshire area. Monthly registrar training days are shared by both groups of trainees, providing a regular opportunity to meet trainees from the whole region.

East/West Yorkshire: Your rotations may take you to the City of Culture 2014 (Hull); the seaside at Scarborough; the international centre of 19th century textile production (Bradford), itself only a stones throw away from the home of the Brontes in Howarth and the 'Gateway to the Dales' at Skipton; St James's Hospital - Jimmy's - internationally famous as Europe's largest teaching hospital; out into the pennines to the Victorian architecture of Huddersfield, whose train station is a Grade I listed building described by John Betjeman as "the most splendid station façade in England"; to the 13th century walkable city walls surrounding York's medieval cobbled streets with the famous Gothic architecture of York Minster at its heart; and finally to Wakefield, the capital of Yorkshire's 'Rhubarb Triangle' where the majority of the world's supply of rhubarb is grown.

South Yorkshire: While West Yorkshire historically developed around wool industry, South Yorkshire was at the heart of the British steel and iron industry. Although the blast furnaces and coal mines have long since closed, evidence of the region's grand Victorian heritage remains. Today Sheffield is a lively city with a large university population.  In addition to bars, theatres and museums, there are the Botanical Gardens and Yorkshire Wildlife Park  on the doorstep. Just to the south is the Peak District National Park and its picturesque towns, Chatsworth House,  and Carsington Water. Placements within this geographical area include Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Barnsley, Chesterfield and Rotherham.
