The rotation is based at:
1. St James’s Institute of Oncology, St. James's University Hospital, Leeds (8 posts)
2. The Bradford Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit (2 post)
3. The Huddersfield Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit (2 posts)
4. Princess Royal Hospital, Hull (2 posts)
5. York District Hospital (1 post)
There are 15 posts in total in the rotation. They provide a comprehensive four year MMC higher specialist training programme in Medical Oncology. Each trainee will rotate through six 8-month posts during their clinical training, including 1-2 years at the Cancer Centre in Leeds. The StRs rotate between positions at St James's University Hospital, the Bradford Teaching Hospitals Oncology Unit (BRI), the Calderdale and Huddersfield Medical Oncology Unit (HRI), The Oncology Centre at Princess Royal Hospital, Hull (PRH), or the Oncology Unit at York District Hospital, providing training in a University Cancer Centre and a District General Hospital. Training is also available in more specialist posts (including Teenage and Young Adult Cancer, and phase I trials).
Each post has a programme of education and training, including the management of a comprehensive range of cancers and clinical trial training (including research governance) for the clinical trial portfolio. Protected time is provided for trainees requiring to attend the regional taught course in non-surgical oncology, as well as appropriate Yorkshire cancer network educational events and communication skills training. Each post provides facilities for 360 degree appraisal that informs educational supervision.
General Medical Oncology is a feature of all posts but specialist experience will be available in each post to provide exposure to all aspects of cancer medicine together with radiotherapy and palliative medicine. Yorkshire trainees can achieve their core clinical training requirements in 36 months on the rotation, allowing some choice of placement for specialisation and career.
