Future Leaders Programme

Investing in leaders of the future – empowering health professionals to make a difference now

NHS England Yorkshire and Humber is passionate about leadership.  The Future Leaders Programme offers opportunities for Postgraduate Doctors in Training (PGDiTs), public health registrars, and qualified nurses/midwives, allied health professionals, pharmacists, and health care scientists working within Yorkshire to do a one-year Leadership Fellowship to help grow and develop their personal leadership skills.

“Being around like-minded peers - having a safe, non-judgmental space to think through the art of the possible, talk openly, raise ideas, express concerns and most importantly problem solve”

The Future Leaders Programme enables the Leadership Fellows to:

  • Enhance skills and competencies that are essential for future healthcare leaders, including those relevant to the domains defined in the Healthcare Leadership Model.
  • Develop and deliver a specialty, management, or quality-improvement driven project that is relevant to the specific needs of the NHS.
  • Undertake a one-year postgraduate qualification e.g. in leadership or medical education.
  • Gain practical and academic experience in leadership from local and national experts in the field.
  • Build a network of expert contacts with NHS management and clinical leaders.

The Leadership Fellows come from a wide variety of specialties and professions.  Fellowships are available in a number of areas from education and simulation, to patient safety and quality improvement.  The Fellowships are based both within the LETB and in hospitals and community settings within our region.  Fellows take on live projects, one year in length, and are responsible for their design and development under the supervision of an experienced leader.

The Leadership Fellows meet regularly and also organise the annual Future Leaders Conference.  The Fellows have access to a variety of development opportunities including coaching, 360 appraisal, participation in an Action Learning Sets, Myers Briggs Type Indicator feedback, and many more.  Please take a look at our FAQs and don’t hesitate to contact the team  if you have any further questions.

“Good leadership is essential for patient safety, and for improved patient experience and outcome. It does not come about because of some happy accident; good leadership needs to be grown and developed. NHS England – Yorkshire and Humber has chosen to invest in the next generation of leaders by creating these Fellowship opportunities. This is an investment in future patient outcomes and quality of care”.
