Welcome to Hull and East Riding GP Training Scheme (HaERTS)
Haerts covers the East Riding of Yorkshire including Hull.
Hull and the surrounding area can be a great place to live and to work, with lots of exciting opportunities.
The city of Hull has been under a lot of development in recent years following being awarded The ‘City of Culture’ in 2017. If you know where to look there are great places to eat, drink and things to do. In addition to city life, Hull itself is situated next to the East Riding of Yorkshire which is full of countryside and rural villages making living in the area the best of both worlds. We are also only 40 minutes from the beach!
Places to Eat and Drink
There are some great places to eat and drink within the city, Humber Street is a new upcoming area with a great variety of restaurants. Another key spot for dining is Newland Avenue and Princes Avenue. If you want to go further afield Beverley is a large historical town with some lovely restaurants and there are lots of small villages with ‘pub grub’ around Hull.
Where to Stay
One of the perks of living here is affordable accommodation. If you enjoy city life you will find some nice accommodation within the city centre such as the BBC building in Queens Court, Victoria Dock and the Marina. The areas of Princess Avenue, Newland Avenue and Beverley Road has a high population of students with plenty of accommodation to rent, these areas area all easily commutable by driving, walking, bus, bike etc. If you are keen to be out of city life, particularly if you have a family why not look for accommodation a little further afield. Castle Hill Hospital is situated in the beautiful village of Cottingham.
- As one of the largest villages in England it has all the amenities you could possibly require in addition to lovely primary schools. There is a free bus which runs from Castle Hill hospital to HRI during daytime hours which can help with commutes. You may even be expected to travel between the 2 sites during work hours depending on your rotation in hospital. There are several other areas around Hull which you will be able to find rented or bought accommodation – Hessle, Kingswood, Anlaby, these are all commutable to both hospital sites.

About GP Training in HaERTS
As part of your GP training, you will have one 6-month GP placement in ST1 or ST2. The other 18 months will be spent in ‘specialities’ - either in the hospital or other community/innovative placements (eg hospice or frailty service). In an innovative training post you will spend half your week in a General Practice and half in a community/hospital based setting. ST3 will be spent as a full year in general practice.
Your speciality rotations will be spread across 2 hospital sites - Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, in addition to many community rotations now available.
Your time spent in primary care is spread across the Humber and East Yorkshire region, the demographics of which can be quite different, and the services offered within each of these vary. Hull ICS (Integrated Care System replacing CCG) compromises of 33 GP practices which together meets the needs of 300 000 patients. The East Riding similarly has over 300, 000 patients, the map below shows how these practices are spread.
