Post start date: August 2023In the context of widespread use of antibiotics and global increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), this project addresses the mandate to embed antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) into the routine care of children and young people (CYP) across South Yorkshire (SY). Based at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and working with the SY Integrated Care Partnership (ICP)across acute trusts in Barnsley, Doncaster & Rotherham and alongside primary care, the aim of the project is to develop a cohesive education package for healthcare professionals. Linking with public health and medical education, the project provides opportunities to explore factors influencing attitudes towards antibiotic usage, with the aim of embedding the principles of AMS into day-to-day practice. Working in partnership with AMS teams and committees in each Trust and with the ICP, the fellow will gain an understanding of wider management structures, through which to influence change. They will be encouraged to complete training in AMS and be supported in ongoing learning and reflection through experience and observation. With the potential to impact the health and wellbeing of the380,000 CYP in SY, and shape future outcomes for CYP not yet born, this project provides the opportunity to change mindsets and influence the behaviour of individuals and organisations, to safeguard antibiotics for future use.
