Level 2 Paediatric Training

Starting January 2021 NHSE is providing level 2 complexity training for 12 dentists over a 24 month period to gain skills to perform an enhanced level of care in Paediatric Dentistry. They will receive training to manage conditions like dental anomalies, traumatic dental injuries and managing children who are anxious or phobic.

This is the first training of its kind and is being led by one of our tutors Rachael Nichol, a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry in Wakefield and supported by Esther McDerra, a specialist in Paediatric Dentistry in Dewsbury. West Yorkshire/Humber and North Yorkshire and South Yorkshire Integrated Care Boards’ invitation for dentists to be accredited as a Level 2 Dentist - Paediatric Dentistry within Yorkshire and the Humber

The 3 Integrated Care Boards in Yorkshire and the Humber are working in collaboration with ICBs’ Yorkshire and the Humber Paediatric Managed Clinical Network and NHSE – Workforce, Training and Education (Yorkshire and Humber) to formally accredit dentists as Level 2 Dentists – Paediatric Dentistry in Yorkshire and the Humber. This has been informed by national guidance issued by the Office of the Chief Dental Officer.

Applications are invited for accreditation as a Level 2 Dentist - Paediatric Dentistry in Yorkshire and the Humber.
 

Application process

Expressions of interest by way of a full CV and portfolio detailed below are now invited for submission. Two rounds of applications have been agreed and the deadlines are as follows.

Application round 1 – Friday 1 November 2024

Application round 2 – Friday 3 January 2025

A local accreditation panel is expected to be convened in late January 2025 to appraise applications.

 

Applicants are advised to submit evidence of the following:

CV

A template has been provided to aid submission and should cover the following core areas:

  • Success in formal relevant examinations (including qualifications gained)
  • Relevant posts held
  • Relevant clinical experience acquired, including relevant dates
  • Evidence of involvement in provision of relevant teaching and training
  • Evidence and level of engagement with clinical governance and relevant service delivery
  • Evidence of clinical leadership in relevant education, service delivery and/or service modernisation
  • Membership, participation and contribution to relevant committees and specialist societies
  • Evidence of relevant enabling activities such as mentorship and guidance to develop staff and teams
  • Evidence of personal participation in relevant clinical audit
  • Details of relevant publications and research including details of prizes/awards won
  • Details of prizes won
  • Personal statement (max 500 words)
  • Two appropriate professional relevant references confirming the applicant’s professional and clinical suitability to provide Level 2 services. This can include local (if available) paediatric consultants, specialists or any other suitably qualified person, to support the application

 

Portfolio

  • Logbook of (at least 20) cases seen over the last 2 years (template provided)
  • Workplace based assessments (WBAs) (templates provided)
  • Clinical Governance Project (max 1000 words) – (template provided)
  • Reflections (template provided)
  • Evidence of training and application of knowledge and skills in relation to the safeguarding           of children (You will be required to show evidence surrounding safeguarding children. Evidence of attending an appropriate CPD course to meet GDC requirements alone will not be sufficient. You will be required to demonstrate that you have knowledge and can apply it to safeguarding situations. This may be in the form of a reflection, it may be evident in your logbook, cases write ups, WBA’s and you could reference it in your personal statement  (template provided)
  • Patient and Colleague Feedback +/- Referrer Feedback (template provided)
  • Appraisals/Mentor Meetings including supporting evidence from trainers and tutors, goal setting, personal development plans with evidence of how they were subsequently developed (template provided, Evidence of mentor meetings or similar to demonstrate identified learning need (goal setting), progress and outcome to support identified learning and development needs. This could be referred to in appraisal documentation and/or PDP
  • 8-10 case studies of Level 2 patients treated within the last 3 years (maximum of 1000 words and 10 images each) – (template provided)
  • Brief summary of case
  • Patient identifier (computer reference number or initials)
  • Date of first appointment
  • Age
  • Where the patient was seen
  • Oral complaint at presentation
  • Social history
  • Dental history
  • Diet history and oral hygiene regimen and habits
  • Medical history and medications
  • Clinical examination details (including extra/intra oral exams, oral health status, charting, should include clinical photos if possible)
  • Details of any special investigations (attach any relevant radiographs)
  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment options
  • Treatment plan
  • Treatment undertaken, including information on behavioural management used
  • Future treatment
  • Personal reflection

 

The panel may request supporting evidence at their discretion. Failure to submit evidence on request may impact on accreditation outcome.

Please note, this process is limited to accreditation only and does not guarantee employment in relation to any potential ICB commissioned Level 2 paediatric NHS service in Yorkshire and the Humber or nationally.  Those applying from out of area should note this accreditation will only apply in relation to Level 2 services commissioned in Yorkshire and the Humber.

This application process is not limited to those colleagues who have completed the NHSE WTE Paediatric Dentistry Level 2 Complexity Care Training Programme.  Applicants who completed the course in December 2024 are required to submit their application by the first submission date.  All further applications must be received by 3 January 2025.  If you have any issues surrounding your submission date requirements please forward your queries via the email below - BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR  APPLICATION
