Leadership Fellow to Further Medical Social Accountability

Post reference: FLP 2020 / Bid 44

Host organisation: School of Paediatrics, HEE YH

Post location: Barnsley Hospital

Eligible staff groups: Medical Specialty Trainees (ST3+)

Post start date: August 2020

The NHS long term plan aims to promote a ‘strong start in life for children and young people’ and to ‘boost out of hospital care’ and the RCPCH curriculum for paediatric trainees has made health promotion one of their key learning domains. An active programme of social accountability (as defined by the WHO) and community engagement is embedded within the ethos of the medical school at Sheffield. This has real potential to be expanded to provide postgraduate medical learners the opportunity to get involved to ensure that postgraduate students learn about social accountability while using their expertise to ensure maximum impact on the communities they work with and the wider networks. This post will allow a trainee to develop their leadership skills by working on new models of care to address health inequalities and health promotion for children involving trainees and health professionals thereby furthering their understanding of social accountability and ability to implement these principles in their working lives. They will evaluate and develop existing links between the Medical School in Sheffield and community providers and develop new links to create a model of engagement in paediatrics that will include trainees to increase the impact of such projects and to support pressurised services in undertaking such work and will aim to link in with national initiatives.
