Out of Programme Research

Supported Return to Training (or SuppoRTT for short) is a centrally funded NHS England programme which aims to support all postgraduate doctors and dentists in training (including Public Health registrars) to safely and confidently return to training after a sustained period of absence.

We recognise that registrars who take time out of training for research often have different needs when returning to training. Our short Taking Time Out for Research video highlights important tips for registrars on and returning from OOPR:

Planning your return

About twelve weeks before your return date, we recommend you organise an initial return meeting with the relevant supervisor or training programme director. This will be an opportunity to plan your return, identify any learning or training needs, and any support or activities that will be helpful for your return. As part of the initial return meeting, you can request a short supernumerary period and or an enhanced supervision period.

Short supernumerary period

SuppoRTT will fund up to 3 supernumery days for resident doctors returning from an absence of 3 months or more. A supernumerary period is when the trainee is considered as an additional member of the team with no fixed work commitments, enabling them to complete a programme of focused learning and clinical activities.

Enhanced supervision period

An enhanced supervision period is a short period where the trainee is given a greater level of supervision in their practice, which may include focused learning activities and direct observation of clinical activities. It is expected that on calls would not be standard in this period, unless the resident doctor has continued clinical practice during time OOP.

Recommended activities for returning registrars:

SuppoRTT Courses

There are many general courses available through SuppoRTT courses which can be booked via Maxcourse.

SuppoRTT CPD Funding

If there is a particular training need that none of the courses address then applications can be made to the SuppoRTT CPD Funding Trainee Courses and Events | Health Education Yorkshire and Humber (please note funding will not be given for courses that are part of mandatory training or exam revision courses).
