Dental Specialty Training

We are delighted to offer extensive training across all dental specialties. Our team of trainers are dedicated to helping specialist trainees meet more than just the minimum standards required by the General Dental Council (GDC). Any registered dentist can choose to work in a dental specialty but only those on the GDC’s specialist lists can call themselves a ‘specialist’. Dental specialists must hold full GDC registration and a certificate of completion of specialist training.

We have both NHS and NIHR funded StR posts.

New Starters

On appointment to a training programme, specialty dentists are required to complete and return the following documentation:

National Training Numbers (NTN)

All dentists appointed to a specialty training programme will be issued with a national training number (NTN) once they have commenced in post. Please retain this for your records as you will require it throughout your training.

Trainee Representatives

The Trainee Representatives for Dental Specialty Training are Euan Rae and Delia Smyth.

Specialty Curricula Transition

The newly revised Dental Specialty Training curricula were introduced in September 2024. They can be accessed on the GDC website: https://www.gdc-uk.org/education-cpd/dental-education/quality-assurance/specialty-curricula

Dentists currently in training in all specialties should move to the most recent GDC approved curriculum and its programme of assessment as soon as it is feasibly possible, taking account of patient and trainee safety whilst also balancing the needs of the service.
