Katie Jarvis - Co-Chair
|
Hi everyone, I’m Katie and I’m excited to be working with the trainee forum as Chair during my Future Leadership Fellowship. I am an ST6 Paediatric Registrar by background based in South Yorkshire. I am a proud advocate for the trainee voice and, as a disabled doctor, I have a particular interest in trainee support, wellbeing, and the creation of inclusive environments. My focus is on ensuring that trainees feel empowered to speak openly about their experiences and that our perspectives are valued in decision-making. I want to hear from you, so please get in touch at england.traineeforum.yh@nhs.net and join the Wider Forum. Outside of medicine, I’m a big ice hockey fan (yes, we have it in the UK!) and love spending time with my family including Ralf the golden retriever. |

Nadiah Fernandes - Communications and Engagement Lead
|
Hello, my name is Nadiah and I'm an ophthalmology registrar. I have always been passionate about improving our training experience and so I was thrilled when the opportunity to become involved in the executive forum came up! It is lovely to meet people from other specialties and hospitals and be involved in a team (rather than my solo clinics!). The most important people, however, are all of YOU. Please do get in touch with any issue no matter how big or small so we can make changes to help us all! I will do my best to try and keep you up to date with all our work and any opportunities that arise and will always be up for a coffee and a chat/moan/vent! |

Olivia Eguiguren-Wray - Secretary |
Hi I'm Liv, a GP trainee (ST2) from Sheffield. I trained in the South West at Exeter and came to Sheffield for F1 where I've stayed since. I've been less than full time for the last few years, first going 80% in F2 and then 60% at the start of my GP training. On my other two days a week I work in the anatomy lab teaching medical students at Sheffield uni during term-time. I'm really interested in improving the working lives of trainees through small, practical changes as well as the bigger policy stuff. My hope is that the better our working lives, the less likely we are to burn out and the longer we will stay in clinical work and enjoying our careers! Outside of work, I enjoy being in my garden, doing crafts (like crochet and embroidery) and cooking. If there's anything you think I can help with please get in touch. |

Stephanie Onyeakusi - Equality and Diversity Co-Lead

|
Jordan Williams - LTFT Co-Lead |
I am a Specialty Trainee in General Adult Psychiatry, and I have spent my entire training career in Yorkshire. I completed my undergraduate medical training at Hull York Medical School and have since worked across Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford, and Harrogate. I worked full time throughout most of my career only transitioning to less than full‑time (LTFT) training as a psychiatric registrar. My interest in LTFT training stems from its evolution over time. Historically, trainees were required to justify their eligibility by categorising their reasons for applying. Since August 2022, following the publication of the new Gold Guide, eligibility for LTFT training became universal. This change was explicitly intended to improve retention, reduce attrition, and enhance the working lives of doctors in training. I am particularly keen to hear trainees’ thoughts, feelings, questions, and lived experiences of LTFT training under this new framework. I am interested in understanding where it is working as intended and, where it is not, exploring why that might be and what practical changes could help improve the system. Outside of work, I am sporty and outdoorsy‑focused, enjoying climbing, running, and exploring. When indoors, it is difficult to keep my outside of the kitchen, where I love cooking. |
|
Katie Miller - Less Than Full Time Co-Lead
|
Hi, I am Katie and I am a higher specialty trainee in Renal and General Medicine. I arrived in South Yorkshire as a medical student in 2009 and never looked back! I have worked LTFT both at the very start of my postgraduate career during FY1, then returned to LTFT training last year as an SpR. I have always been a big advocate for LTFT training and am pleased that all trainees now have access to flexible working. I am very grateful to be able to provide a voice for LTFT trainees across the deanery as part of the executive forum. Outside of work I enjoy walking my dog Rhea (I am originally from the Lake District so love having the Peaks on my doorstep!), exploring National Trust gardens or pottering about in my own garden, and more recently my allotment - I have always been middle aged at heart! I am keen to hear from both current and potential LTFT trainees regarding their experiences, I know that it can be a difficult process to navigate and am happy to provide assistance or just a listening ear! My email is katherine.miller13@nhs.net |

Stella Chatzieleftheriou – South Locality lead |
Hi, my name is Stella and I am the South Locality Lead. I am an O&G ST3 working LTFT. I moved to South Yorkshire for foundation training and have grown to love living in Sheffield. Having spent so long here, I have experienced the positives and the negatives of training in the area. I have spent the majority of the last few years supporting my colleagues with concerns about their contract and workplace issues, now I am ready to help tackle all the training issues we face. I want to advocate for you to have the best possible training despite the limits. I am open to people emailing me with ideas that they need help realising or individual problems so that we have find solutions together. Outside of work I am a keen baker and love to spend time doing pilates (though my balance could really use some more time in the studio). |
|
Matt Rose - West Locality Lead
|
I'm Matt, a Paediatric Registrar from West Yorkshire and I'm your West Locality Lead. I love my job, and I particularly enjoy teaching and simulation. I trained in Newcastle and moved to Yorkshire to be closer to family. In this role I want to be a clear and approachable voice for trainees in West Yorkshire, helping you to solve problems related to training and signpost you to helpful contacts. I want to help you make changes- if you think you know how you can improve training at your hospital or in your specialty, then I can try to help facilitate this. Outside of medicine I've got two children and a huge labrador called Bruno. I love cricket, getting outside for walks, and spending time with my kids. |

Nkiruka Edward-Alali - North & East locality lead
|
Hi, I’m Nkiruka Edward-Alali, a GP Registrar (GPST3) currently out of programme on the Future Leaders Programme in Yorkshire and Humber, where I serve as the Leadership Fellow for Social Accountability in GP training. I also have a strong interest in medical education and am a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Leeds through the GP Visiting Lecturer scheme. My fellowship has deepened my understanding of the challenges facing GP registrars in the region and I am passionate about improving the quality of training and ensuring that registrars feel supported, valued, and empowered throughout their journey. As the North and East Locality Lead for the Trainee Executive Forum, I hope to bring these insights to the forefront, working with peers and leaders to strengthen training environments and promote fairness, wellbeing, and inclusion across our region. Outside of work, I love spending time with family and sharing a good laugh. Shwetabh Singh - Wider Forum Lead
|
Hi everyone, I’m Shwetabh. I’m a less than full time GP trainee in the Leeds Deanery with a specialist interest in Sports and Exercise Medicine and pre-hospital care. Alongside my GP training, I currently work as the Lead Doctor for Hull Kingston Rovers as well as a crowd doctor at Leeds United, so I spend a fair bit of time juggling clinical work with elite sport and pitch-side medicine. I’m the Wider Forum Lead for Yorkshire and Humber Medical and Dental Trainees, where my role is really about bringing people together across the region, sharing what works well, and making sure trainee voices from Yorkshire and Humber are heard both regionally and nationally. Really looking forward to working with everyone and hearing your thoughts!

Juanita Oriaku - Wellbeing & Support Lead

Hi there, I'm Juanita (pronounced ʰwɑˈni tɑ). I am a General Practice Registrar currently on an Out of Programme Experience with NHS England WT&E (Yorkshire & Humber) Future Leaders Programme, where I serve as the Leadership Fellow for IMG-supported Return to Training (suppoRTT). I have a special interest in Urology, backed by an MCh in the field. Outside of work, I’m a homebody at heart. When I’m not enjoying medical dramas or police procedurals, I love spending time with friends and family and traveling for a change of scenery. I’m passionate about physical and mental wellness. What is reverse mentoring?
Traditional mentoring involves the education and sponsorship of junior colleagues by senior colleagues who are already advanced in their career and leadership position. Reverse mentoring inverts the paradigm with junior colleagues mentoring the senior staff, in this instance, junior doctors will act as mentors to senior doctors with the aim of addressing differential attainment. This will involve inviting postgraduate/trainee UK and International medical graduates from ethnic minority backgrounds to pair with trainers or consultants from all other ethnic backgrounds for a period of 6 months in-order to mentor trainers/consultants on their lived experiences of training as an individual from an ethnic minority background.
What are the benefits of such a program?
Similar reverse mentoring work has been introduced in other industries and organisations including digital technology companies and the beauty industries. There are envisaged benefits for the participating trainee mentors, the senior staff mentees, and for the NHS on an organisational level. The scheme aims to embed the experiences of minority ethnic team members within the leadership consciousness of the NHS. It offers an opportunity to explore discussions on race in a safe space, and challenge systemic biases, thereby promoting a more inclusive training culture.
In addition to effecting positive changes on an organisational level, the participating trainee mentors also learn from the experiences and leadership journey of their paired senior consultant / trainer mentee. Mentors will also develop professional networks, gain career development insights and a more intimate understanding of how training works. We hope that this project will mirror the success of similar schemes in which participants valued the close relationships that formed between the mentor & mentee and lead to bi-directional learning. Differential attainment is now a priority item in our organisation’s agenda and is a personal priority for our leaders.
How does the scheme work?
After recruiting mentors and mentees through a short survey, a pairing exercise will be carried out to match trainers/senior colleagues and trainees/junior colleagues with compatible goals. Other considerations for matching are preferred speciality and place of employment as indicated in the responses to the survey questions. Mentors and mentees will be matched on MentorNet with bi-directional access to paired participants profiles enabled.
We anticipate that mentor-mentee meetings will occur approximately every 4-6 weeks over a period of 6 months (4 or 6 meetings) with each meetings lasting around 60 minutes.
What support and resources are provided?
All participants are provided with a mentor or mentee handbook, as appropriate and additional support is provided throughout the scheme, including:
- Induction separately held for mentors and mentees.
- Group supervision for mentors / trainees as a reflective space with date options.
- Mid-term review for mentees/trainers with date options.
- Joint ending/closing session for both mentees and mentors.
- Informal supervision with project facilitators as needed.
- Letter of support for study leave.
- Participation letters signed from the deanery.
How can I become a mentor or mentee?
We use an expressions of interest process to identify future mentors and mentees, which is open all year round. Once applications for a cohort open, we contact all who have expressed an interest with details of the application process and a link to the online application form.

WHAT ARE WE ABOUT?
The YH Trainee Forum was created in 2020 and provides a platform for all postgraduate doctors and dentists in training in the Yorkshire and Humber region to offer feedback, share ideas for ways to improve training, and raise any concerns regarding the quality of their education, training and experience in the region.
The Forum's purpose is to promote excellent training, enhance recruitment and retention and improve the postgraduate doctor and dentist in training experience for all. The Forum is chaired and run by trainees in direct contact with the YH Postgraduate Dean and the Deanery team.
The YH Trainee Forum is structured with an Executive and Wider Forum who work together collaboratively to drive improvements in quality of education and training, well-being, and support.
