FAQs
The enhance programme, whether done at Level 1 (enable) or Level 2 (explore) allows you to demonstrate your Foundation competences in a different way. It provides evidence that you have met these competences, and at the same time allows you to explore areas beyond Foundation, thinking differently about your work, and building your CV towards your next role.
You have to demonstrate your Foundation competences one way or another, so while enhance enable might feel like extra work, in fact it is allowing you to show these competences in a structured and organised way. Enhance enable takes about 4-6 hours per module.
Enhance explore is a more significant commitment involving work over a full year. It is therefore only available to F2 doctors who can use their study leave, or those towards the end of F1 who may have to use annual leave if they want to do this.
There is no charge for the enhance programme. The exception is if you are interested in completing a PG Certificate related to enhance, which will cost money (see Question How do I get to do a PG Certificate)
No, participation in enhance is entirely voluntary.
No, with enhance enable you can do as many or as few modules as you wish. Enhance explore will need to be completed within a year (all modules).
Enhance is not an ARCP requirement, but many people find it is easier to organise their portfolio and show that they have met their competences once they have done the programme.
You will get a certificate for each module you complete. This can be added to your portfolio and CV. If you complete all six Foundation modules you will get a Certificate of Contextual Leadership which is equivalent to a two-day leadership course. In some specialties this will give you an extra point, but in all cases, it will give you something to talk about at interview.
Enhance enable takes about 4-6 hours per module to complete. The work involves a mixture of self-directed learning through reading, videos, podcasts etc., formal learning through lectures (such as F1 teaching) or ward-based learning and also work-based activities which can be done as part of your job. Most people find that this is a really good use of protected self-development time, giving a structure and a focus to that time.
There is a guide (co-written with Foundation doctors) about adding evidence to Horus in the documents on this website [add link – it’s already in the Useful links section]. Please also see the video “How to Use the Enhance Learning Hub – Video” above [add link please]. There are other step-by-step videos available on the enhance Learning Hub.
There are guides for supervisors on the national enhance website and on the enhance Learning Hub Your regional Enhance FTPD will also be able to provide bespoke support for your supervisor if needed.
If you are interested in doing a PG Certificate related to enhance, please email hyp-tr.enhance.yorkshire@nhs.net for more information. There is no funding available for PG Certification at Foundation level, so you will have to find your own funding (currently approx. £3400). The actual enhance programme is free.
For Enhance Enable (self-directed learning) start here: Enhance Enable Guide: Foundation Doctors YH
Please ‘opt-in’ to further contact whenever you are given the opportunity. This allows your Foundation teams (administrators and FTPDs) to know you have signed up for the learning. This will help them to let you know about any support, resources or opportunities available to help you. Letting the Foundation team know you are doing a module does not mean you are obliged to finish it!
Some Trusts and regions will organise information and sign-up sessions which create a peer support group for enhance e.g. in Bradford you can sign up to the area-wide programme at Level 1 and learn with multi-professional colleagues. In Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster, support sessions for Foundation doctors are being developed within the regional Integrated Care System. In Hull and North Yorkshire there are opportunities to attend stand-alone learning sessions, which may be activity-based. This situation is dynamic and changing rapidly across the region – keep coming back to this page, and to the YH Enhance webpage for updated information.
If you are interested in the enhance explore programme please hyp-tr.enhance.yorkshire@nhs.net for more information or see our explore webpage Generalism Enhance Enhancing Generalist Skills – Yorkshire and the Humber.
For Enhance Enable (self-directed learning) start here: Enhance Enable Guide: Foundation Doctors YH
Please ‘opt-in’ to further contact whenever you are given the opportunity. This informs your Foundation teams (administrators and FTPDs) that you have signed up for the learning and may allow access to live learning events.
You can also access the materials and other resources via the enhance Learning Hub. We have linked to a selection of this material in the Enhance Enable guide. You will need to create an account on the Learning Hub or use your e-Learning for Health log-in to gain access.
Yes. We would recommend completing the Foundation workbooks in F3 or ST1/CT1, as these will give you the Certificate of Contextual Leadership, but there are post-Foundation/multiprofessional workbooks for higher grades available on the enhance Learning Hub. You may also want to consider enhance explore in your post-Foundation years.
Enhancing Generalist Skills is in the new Foundation curriculum (expected 2026) and the Foundation School has therefore introduced a regional teaching day to introduce the concepts for all Foundation trainees, and to support your education using Enhance as a vehicle for delivering core Foundation learning. You should each be allocated to one mandatory training day across 2025-26; as with all regional Foundation teaching this face to face session may take place in a Trust away from your base.
This day is a core Foundation teaching day. If you are already enrolled on the enhance programme you may use this learning to support your knowledge in the various enhance domains. If you are not already undertaking the enhance programme there will be an opportunity to sign up after the session, but this is entirely voluntary.
