What is coaching?

Coaching is time for you to think.  Your coach won’t judge you, or give you advice.  This means it is ok to talk about anything that you feel gets in the way of you doing your best at work. You can really think things through in a way that is different to talking things over with a friend, partner, TPD or Educational Supervisor - all people who tend to have another agenda for you.  Your coach will support you, and challenge you if necessary, to help you reach a conclusion that is helpful and meaningful to you.

Your sessions are completely confidential - your coaching is nothing to do with your performance in training, or your ARCP.


Who else has coaching?

Coaching is a normal professional activity in many jobs.  The GMC, plus many medical colleges and curricula recognise its benefits.

Where do I get coaching?

We have a list of experienced coaches based across Yorkshire and Humber waiting to help you, to access the list simply contact with your name, grade, place of work and specialty. We'll then send you a password to access the list of coaches  

You can choose a coach local to you so you won’t have to travel too far. Some coaches offer coaching via phone or skype so that is always an option if travel is a problem. Some coaches run their sessions at their place of work, some at their home, some at the deanery offices.


How long is a session?

Usually 60 to 90 minutes.  You can have between 4 and 6 free sessions with a coach.  It tends to work best if you have all your sessions within a 6 month window.  This isn’t a hard and fast rule, we just notice that people get more out of coaching if they commit to it and get on with it, rather than let it drift.
