Paediatric Surgery in Yorkshire and the Humber

Paediatric surgery is the branch of medicine that deals with the diseases, trauma and malfunctions of the childhood years, spanning the foetal to teenage period.

Specialist paediatric surgery includes:

  • neonatal surgery (mostly the surgery of congenital abnormalities)
  • major intestinal surgery of infants and children
  • major trauma surgery
  • children’s cancer surgery
  • paediatric urology

Common procedures include:

  • head and neck surgery (cysts, tumours, etc.)
  • thoracic surgery (oesophageal, lung and bronchial anomalies)
  • abdominal surgery
  • operations of kidneys, bladder and ureters
  • correction of external genitalia
  • treatment of anorectal anomalies
  • treatment for trauma

Paediatric Surgery training in the UK takes place in a number of consortiums in order to provide broad exposure to paediatric surgery. Health Education England working across Yorkshire and the Humber is part of the Northern Consortium which also includes Health Education East Midlands and Health Education North East.

The expected duration of this training programme is six years subject to satisfactory progression. The actual duration may depend on the circumstances of individual trainees.

Programme Information

Rotation Details

Trainees may be placed in any of the training sites within the consortium. Trainees rotate on the first Wednesday of October. Some trainees may also rotate on the first Wednesday of April.  For the 2014 rotation these dates will be 7 October 2015 and 6 April 2016.
