Locum Work during GP Training
GP trainees are generally advised not to undertake any locum work whilst they are in training. This is a training programme, and time needs to be spent on study. Some trainees need extra support during their training, and some need extensions to their time in practice, notably if they fail MRCGP. Any registrar who does locum work in addition to their normal post may no longer be eligible for an extension to their training for whatever reason.
However if a trainee thinks that doing locum work will not compromise their training and they are making satisfactory progress, they can choose to do this.
Your Educational Supervisor and the GPSTP office should be informed, and you should ask your Educational Supervisor to add an Educators Note to your ePortfolio regarding the locum work. You should also inform your employer – hospital trust or GP trainer if in practice.
You should add a Clinical Encounter ePortfolio learning log entry for each shift you do and must also remember to include this type of work on the Form R you will be asked to complete prior to your annual ARCP panel review.
You should also ensure that the additional work will not put you in breach of EWTD, either the total hours or rest time regulations.
Please note this applies equally to working extra shifts in a different specialty to your current training post, and to taking up extra shifts in your current specialty.
LTFT Trainees - Ad-hoc hours/Additional Employment
Trainees who are eligible for LTFTT should note that it is the policy of the HE Yorkshire and the Humber that they are not permitted to undertake any regular employment, either within or out of the NHS, in addition to their agreed timetable and their timetabled out of hours work. However, if there is a requirement within the department for an occasional additional shift due to unexpected circumstances (i.e. sick leave) trainees are encouraged to assist their fellow team members. It should be noted that this is not for planned absences (i.e. annual leave).
