Enhanced Alumni Offer

Please click through the buttons below to find out more about our enhanced alumni offer. Please note this is only available to current fellows. We advise to read through the information carefully prior to submitting an application.

Why has this scheme been created?

We recognise that many fellows have an excellent experience whilst on the programme but sometimes feel their skills developed are lost once they return to busy clinical posts. With this scheme we aim to give fellows the opportunity to continue their leadership activities alongside clinical work. This will be an an extension of your current post. Applications must detail clearly planned activities during the extended period, and all applications will be considered on a case by case basis.

What does the scheme entail?

Current fellows will be offered the opportunity to continue their work for one day per week. Funding is available for a maximum of 10 fellows per year. Fellows will have access to all educational opportunities offered by the Future Leaders Programme. There will also be specific opportunities on offer for Alumni Scheme Fellows. At present this scheme will be available for 1 year only.

When should I apply for the scheme?

Applications must be submitted by no later than the 1st of the month that is 4 months prior to your expected date of returning to clinical work e.g. if you are due to commence clinical work in August then your application should be received by 1st April. You will be notified of the outcome within 4 weeks.

Please send all completed application forms to futureleaders.yh@hee.nhs.uk

What do I need to include with my application?

The form to submit is available to download from the bottom of the page. In the event of us receiving more than 10 applications to partake in the scheme, a panel will review applicants’ letters submitted and make a decision based on the clarity of aims and objectives and potential benefit of an extended period of fellowship.

  • Letter outlining my personal reason(s) for extension and aims and objectives
  • Letter in support of extension from Supervisor of Leadership and Management project
  • Letter in support of extension from Head of School of parent specialty or future line manager
How can I combine this with my clinical work?

Junior Doctor Fellows:

OOPE – This would mean you were out of programme for one day per week and the time as a fellow would not count towards your training. Fellows undertaking the scheme on this basis would need to complete an application for Less than Full Time (LTFT) training on a category 2 basis of opportunity for professional and personal development. We advise you prepare paperwork for this at the same time as applying for the alumni scheme as this would need to be submitted at least 3 months prior to commencing the clinical post. Undertaking the scheme in this way would mean extending your CCT date.

Information and policies regarding LTFT training is available here.

OOPT – This would mean that time undertaken on the fellowship would count towards your training as often such work fills many of the competencies required for CCT. Please note to undertake the scheme on this basis your fellowship post should ideally be undertaken in a GMC approved training location. Further information regarding this is available here.

If you are planning to undertake the post on this basis you are advised to discuss this with your Training Programme Director and Head of School. Evidence of their approval must be submitted alongside your application.

Fellows from other backgrounds:

Secondment - Fellows hoping to undertake the alumni scheme on this basis should discuss with your future line manager and employer. Evidence of their support must be included with your application.
