INDUCTION

Whenever you start a new post you are going to require an induction in order for you to familiarise yourself with the training, the assessment, the supervision, your working environment, and the employment matters specific to your place of work. You will receive specific inductions locally for your local education provider (LEP- i.e., your employing Trust), and your department at each new hospital within your rotation. You should be informed directly about these from your employing Trust, but please liaise with your College Tutor to discuss your Trust and departmental induction if needed. 

The subsequent information on this webpage will relate specifically to your Induction to the School of Anaesthesia and NHS England Workforce, Training & Education (The Deanery).

Anaesthetic doctors in training are invited to a School induction at the start of core/ACCS-Anaesthetics year 1 and ST4. ACCS-Anaesthetics trainees will also return for the start of year 2 (their novice anaesthesia year).
 

An induction for Intensive Care Medicine occurs separately, usually in February and September.

Induction to your School

Since 2018 we have run a pan-Yorkshire & The Humber School Induction, in a central location (Leeds), open to all trainees new to the region, or starting a new stage of training.
The programme is adjusted each year in response to trainee feedback, but the topics covered usually include the following:
  • Overview of the School including geography, introduction and explanation of roles of ES, CS, TPD, HoS and information on pastoral support
  • The ARCP and work-based assessment system including the expectations for ARCP, and how the Hub system works for ST trainees
  • Trainee-led breakout sessions for individual trainee groups (e.g., ACCS year 1) covering top tips, portfolio advice and techniques for getting the best out of the training programme
  • Breakout sessions on dual ICM training
  • Advice and tips for times of stress and difficulty
  • Opportunities in the region including leadership fellowships, audit network, teaching, discussion and AARMY, CAT and other local groups 
  • Introduction to the Lifelong Learning Platform (LLP)
  • Exam preparation and tips including the Study Leave application process, and the recommended courses for each year
  • Introduction to trainee reps, Head of School (HoS) and other attending members of the training establishment
     
Unfortunately, the Corona outbreak in 2020, forced us to move online for a couple of years. Whilst this reduced some of the networking opportunities, it did allow better access for trainees who may have previously been unable to attend for the whole day, and helped generate a variety of e-content that could be accessed after the event.
This webpage aims to host Induction content from previous years in the hope it may prove useful to prospective or existing trainees.
In 2022 we returned to a full face to face induction format.

RCoA registration

Core/ACCS-Anaesthetics:

As soon as you secure a core training post please complete a core registration form and send it to the membership department. Once registered, a Lifelong Learning Platform (LLp) account will be created for you.  Registration with the College is a General Medical Council requirement.
NHS England's Trainee Information System (TIS) will automatically generate your training number on the first day of your initial rotation; the College is aware of this process and will therefore accept applications without a training number.

ST Registration

On appointment to an ST4 post please complete a Specialty Registrar training registration form and send it to the membership department.  Registration with the College is a GMC requirement. Anaesthetic training is not a run through training programme, and as Anaesthetists receive an outcome 6 after they successfully complete core training, they must re-register, once they secure an ST4 post.

CT1 - Things to do in the first month of training
  • ensure you have registered with the College - this will activate a Lifelong Learning Platform (LLP) account. This is the ePortfolio system introduced in 2018 by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA).

  • ensure you have returned your Form R (Part A) to HEE

  • Meet with your Educational Supervisor and College Tutor, and sign a learning agreement

  • Get to grips with the curriculum and make a start on the 19 WPBAs you need to gain the initial assessment of competence (IAC)

  • Read the Curriculum

What should I do in my first few weeks as an ST Trainee?

Don’t forget to register for Intermediate Training with the College and to start getting your Intermediate Level Training Certificate filled in. If you haven’t been given a certificate at ST3 induction you can print one off from the College website. ST3 and 4 years make up intermediate training and comprise core and general modules as outlined in “Units of Training”. By the end of ST4 you should have completed all training modules and passed the Final FRCA exam. You will then receive your Intermediate Level Training Certificate signed off by the College Tutor and Training Programme Director. The College will then compute your anticipated CCT date.

I am just starting as an ACCS Anaesthesia trainee. Which induction should I attend? EM or Anaesthesia?

Ideally you should attend the Anaesthesia Induction, as it will provide most of the information required for your first year AND provide insight into how to approach your entire early training to maximise your anaesthesia skills. However, if local rotas prevent this, then attending the EM induction instead will be fine. You do not need to attend both.

I was a core trainee in Y&H, do I really need to come?

The Induction is for your benefit, to ensure you have accurate, up-to-date information to help guide your training. The rotations at Higher level have a different structure and a different focus to the core training programmes, therefore attendance at induction is highly recommended.

I am an ICU trainee. What should I do?
There will be a separate ICM induction, usually in September, to induce you to the ICM programme.
