Gastroenterology in South Yorkshire

There are 12 trainees in South Yorkshire serving a population of around 2.5 million people. Of the 5 year training programme in gastroenterology, trainees rotate yearly around Sheffield Teaching Hospitals: the Northern General Hospital and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the district general hospitals of Barnsley and Doncaster.  All hospitals in the South Yorkshire region have close links with The University of Sheffield Medical School.

Trainee satisfaction in the region is very high due to excellent relationships between training units and the great number of training opportunities available to a small number of trainee’s.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed this region for my gastroenterology training. The mix of busy district general hospitals and large tertiary centers allow for development of clinical and endoscopic skills. I have always felt supported by the consultants and the MDT and there is a strong focus on training, teaching and research. There are out of programme pathways for accessing research or subspecialty interest in IBD, endoscopy, coeliac disease, capsule endoscopy and hepatobiliary. In addition, there is a real sense of comradery between the registrars and the consultants and as a gastroenterology trainee you do feel encouraged and motivated in achievement of your goals"
