There are marked differences in healthy life expectancy between the most and least deprived in the region. Diseases contributing to this are largely preventable, with the impact and effectiveness of primary prevention, secondary prevention, and treatment differing by disease. Too often prioritisation of prevention often does not align with need and there are inequalities in the populations who benefit from prevention services, further exacerbating health inequalities. The introduction of Integrated Care Partnerships (ICPs) provides opportunities for prevention to be coordinated across the system.  The fellow will be based in the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), working at a regional level. They will be given ownership to design an innovative project to help address the balance of prevention activity across ICPs, embed prevention in all pathways, and tackle health inequalities. They will work collaboratively with partner organisations to encourage shared ownership across the system.   In OHID the fellow will be supported by an experienced supervisor, a public health consultant, who will support them to access personal development courses and learning opportunities.  The project will provide an excellent opportunity to develop a broad range of leadership skills across all domains of the Healthcare Leadership Model but particularly in inspiring a shared purpose, sharing the vision, evaluating information, connecting our services, and influencing for results.

Commercial determinants of health (CDOH) describe how industry affects health, including harm from consuming tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy food, and from gambling and fossil fuel industries. Health inequalities are exacerbated as more deprived communities experience the most related harm. This post’s aim (alongside the Fellow's development) is to improve population health and reduce health inequalities by increasing understanding of, and drive collaborative action to address, CDOH across the health and care system regionally and nationally.    In the context of new and emerging work programmes considering how commercial entities affect health, the Fellow will scale-up work strategically between regions and nationally to approach risk factor prevention in combination, reducing pressure on NHS services. The Fellow will collaborate with regional and national stakeholders: ICSs, NHS, local and regional government (including the Office for Health Improvement & Disparities), ADsPH, academia, and VCSEs e.g. Action on Smoking & Health. The Fellow may work locally with communities to engage the public on related issues. They will work with senior leaders, and represent the region at high-level meetings.    The Fellow will be supported in their autonomy over project details, but potential outputs could include a collaborative framework for a cross risk-factors approach to health, position statements on behalf of stakeholder groups, and contributing to research.

Is our regional supported return to training (suppoRTT) programme meeting the needs of International medical graduates (IMGS) new to the NHS? IMGs account for a significant proportion of the NHS workforce. In 2020, over 10,000 IMGs joined the NHS medical workforce . Those starting in the NHS are faced with unique and variable challenges. Since 2020, IMG trainees have been specifically included in SuppoRTT programme. However, there are still gaps in our offering for IMGs/ refugee doctors. This is an exciting opportunity for a Future leadership fellow to commence a project with three main components. Firstly, the SuppoRTT project in which you will have the opportunity to determine both the scope and direction. Secondly, your own personal development as a leader, in this respect you are the project. The third component is the successful completion of a relevant one-year postgraduate qualification of your choice. Regular supervision with an Associate Dean will be timetabled. Interested applicants for whom English is not their first language may wish to consider NHSE WTE YH coaching towards preparation for an application.
