Workforce, training and education
Yorkshire and Humber

Our large region spreads from Scarborough to Chesterfield and Halifax to Hull, embracing Leeds and Sheffield and a population of over 5 million people. Within it are urban conurbations and many rural areas (the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors, and the East Coast).

The Yorkshire Rotation in Respiratory Medicine provides a five year balanced training in General (Internal) Medicine and Respiratory Medicine leading to a dual CCT. Entry to the programme is at ST3 level. There are a total of sixty three posts in three pools of jobs to allow trainees to rotate through a variety of training posts. Candidates can express a preference, and in response to training needs, trainees can move throughout the region.

District general hospitals provide experience in high intensity general medicine alongside training in respiratory medicine. We try to provide a spectrum of DGH experience and most trainees will spend the first two years of the rotation in this part of the training; spending a year in each post. All posts are EWTD compliant. Most give opportunities to develop some specialist skills.

There are also posts in the specialist units in Leeds, Sheffield & Hull. These provide balanced training in most areas of specialist respiratory medicine with an opportunity to pursue research interests. These jobs provide a mixture of specialised Respiratory Medicine. A three month attachment in Intensive Care Medicine will usuallynbe arranged during the teaching hospital placements .

All Consultants involved in the training programme are Physicians with expertise in Respiratory Medicine and General (Internal) Medicine.  Opportunities are made available to fulfil all the requirements of the curriculum. Some trainees may take a period out of programme with a view to working towards a higher degree such as an MD.
