Appraisal describes the informal and confidential dialogue that should occur regularly between the trainee and their Educational Supervisor. It should be a supportive and formative exercise that underpins trainee development.

Assessment is the system whereby the progress of the trainee is gauged, according to the curricula and the specialty blueprints. It is a summative process, and requires documentation that should be shared with the trainee. It informs the annual review (ARCP) and incorporates workplace-based assessments (WPBAs) and knowledge-based assessments (PACES and SCEs, for example). Further information on assessment can be obtained from the JRCPTB website Assessment Introduction and related topics are accessible via the menu on the left of this page.
